Default rear toubles!!!

i have an 03 silvy std cab short box 1500 5.3 ls 2wd.... the rear keeps locking and unlocking in turns and makes a terrible noise doing so....i'm thinking just replace the whole rear since i have no idea how to rebuild one (taking it to someone is not an option... i like to do my own work!) but i figure what the hell if i rebuild it myself than i'll know how to do it! now heres my question... has anyone else had this problem? is it an easy fix? (as compared to rebuilding a motor) what parts do i need, what to look out for, can it still be driven like this or will i totally f@#$ it up? can i just replace the factory locker with an aftermarket one? what am i getting myself into? thanx for all your help it will be greatly appreciated!

Sounds personal. How many miles? DD? I think my nephew did. Seems he had junk u-jt & hmm...I can call him later if u don't get any replies better than mine, or if it'd help you. I say learn. Only 2 things I worry bout, trans & rears. I've done a TH350 or 2. Never a rear, might do rear in my 89. I know I need brgs, maybe r&p, might go axles if I keep it! Dial indicator, lapping compound, lube. Have you dropped rr cover, I'm thinkin no? Install kit maybe if u r puttin in TruTrac. Goals?
