Default Ran the truck...

1st run:

60': 2.67
1/4: 14.90
MPH: 90.88

This was a weird run.

I had a lot of KR with only 27-28* of timing. Five 'dings', all were 2* with one 4* hit. I pulled the timing back to a max of 26-27*. Added .01 to PE table to fatten it up a bit. (02's were down around 870 [odd], so I was nervous.)

I have no idea what was up with that 60'. I have to wonder if I spun. I had my foot DOWN. (the truck will spin them in the rain, so who knows?).

Going through logs this morning, I see that my IAT's were 120*F!! Stupid fans were running the whole 3-4 minute wait in line... but I didn't think my truck was THAT hot.

My g/cyl range was "off", probably due to the IAT's. I normall hit over 80, and I only saw a max of 77. My MAF was about 2lbs low also.

2nd run:

60': 2.13
1/4: 14.56
MPH: 92.09

I got a knock at the door when I initially put my foot down, but other than that it was a nice looking (scan wise) run. The launch felt good. Scanner is telling me I'm flashing the (still stock) converter to 2,000, maybe 2,100.

I have no idea why, or where it came from, but I pulled 29.5* of timing on this run. My IAT's were 74-63*F at the end of the run. It's not coming from that table. maybe the "AFR Spark Advance Correction - Add" table? With the PE values I'm running, this table looks the most guilty.

G/cyl range was 80-84, which is normal. MAF was still 2lbs lower.

I'm shifting at 5,800. Full street-weight. Spare, tailgate, jack, rear-seat, 3/4 tank of gas. (plus all that other junk I got on the truck - sway bars, dual exhaust, underseat storage, trailer hitch).

I definitely see some needed improvements in the shifting department. This thing is a complete slushbox at WOT.

Sounds like you are really getting the hang of this tuning thing. Why are you shifting so early?? I would think that cam would pull at least until 6000. Have you taken any TQManagement out yet?? Have you raised line pressure at all yet??
Nice runs BTW!!

Good tuning there marc_w! I have not had the chance to play much with the HPTuner stuff. Too much info! I would really like to get some extra help with my mods if you or greentahoe are game. I did try GMCSki but he wanted some money in exchange for his services. Sorry to sound like a tightwad but after spending $500 for the software I was not looking to spend more.

Thanks.

Yeah, the shifting thing. I'm guilty of going WOT through first a few times a week. I lowered my shift points to 5,800 to hopefully save on some wear and tear. I meant to raise them up, but figured what the heck, I'm run it like I've been running it.

At 5,800, I actually scan 5,900 before the next gear comes in. The cam here has a healthy midrange, so I don't "think" I'm loosing too much... ? I've shifted at 6,200, but things feel a little 'winded' up there. At least on the street.

I have almost all TM removed - except for the shifts. (no abuse modes or any of that junk). I have TM set to limit torque on the 1-2 shift to 300 ft/lbs, and 350ft/lbs on the 2-3. I thought of turning it off completely, but I'll wait until I have the shift kit in there.

Basically I set things pretty conservatively... I'm rather confident with the tuning stuff - just not experienced with getting it to work well at the track. I've only been doing short burts on the street and looking for gas mileage and such.

Here's a print screen of the better run.

I found that it's easier to just zero the table that adjusts timing based on PE. Less confusing.

Id love to be in the position to lend a hand. Unfortunately you are probably better than I at this point. All of my free time has gone to buying and trying to get stuff installed. I havent spent any time with the HPTuners yet. It doesnt help that Im now working near 60 hours a week and trying to get new guys trained.
Have you looked at the HPTuners bin in the PCM section to see if someone with similiar mods has downloaded a file?? Thats where I would start although I doubt I would find anyone with a setup similiar to mine

Raise your shift points once you get the stall in. With the higher shift extension, it'll help to keep in the desired power range.

You crossed the traps at 4200rpm which is a tad low, from what I've heard is ideal. For best e.t., you should cross right after peak hp. Which would probably set you crossing the traps at around 6000rpm.

Good times by the way.

Are you thinking about getting a wideband? And how about the update. You see anything that might be useful to your tuning?

Thanks, Yeah, definitely getting a wideband this winter. Half the reason why I haven't been enthusiastic about getting to the track is because there is so much I want to do and tune - things only feel 'partly done'.... and done only 'partly right'. I'm not comfortable with pushing the truck without knowing my fueling...

I'll be installing the headers and converter next weekend - hopefully the shift kit too. It's going to be a long day!

Next purchase will probably be an intake... then wideband... and heads in the spring. I think I'll be looking to dump the exhaust via a straight-through muffler... then I've got VHP 1.89 rockers on the list too.

Yeah, I noticed the RPM's in third. I'd love to drop some 4.56's under the truck to get those RPM's up.

The HPT update? Yeah, I'm mainly anxious to get it just to play around with the narrow-band 02 readings. It's basically what I've (we've all?) been doing now, just prettier. There is a whole lot of other cool stuff that's done, that I probably won't realize the effectiveness of until I actually have 1.5 in my hands.

I'd like to see one the SS guys stick a lighter wheel on all 4's and a shorter tire.

That'd bump up your rpm and probably kick a dent in your e.t.'s.
