Default Problem with a/c

I have a small prob with the a/c. Clutch won't enguage at an idle. Bring rpm's to ~1k and it kicks on and works fine. Let it go back to idle and it kicks off again. ???

have you had it serviced (or was the evaporator - infront of the radiator - removed to service something else) recently? What you are describing is caused by TOO MUCH or NOT ENOUGH freon in the system. The AC 'clutch' operates on pressure. At idle, with the proper amount in there, it will work all the time, (unless the compressor is going bad). When you change the revs, the pressure in the system is changed. Having too much or too little freon, will make it act screwy.

Have it checked. with the car OFF, you should have about 65 psi on BOTH the high and low side. With it operational, you should have about 30 on the low side, and 90-110 on the high.

Hope this helps.

ps...if you do have the right amount of freon in there, just add a little bit, just enough to make it kick on at idle. Thats what we do in the Appliance (A/C and refrigeration) industry. That will make it cold for you, and won't kill it any faster. If its gonna die, you might as well be comfortable until it does.
