Power source for gauges?
#1
I need a new power source for my gauges. I hooked into the dimmer switch in the headlight control block for my power source but there is a problem. That circuit does not iluminate during the day in my truck and I have to turn the headlights on if I want power to my gauges. After dark it works fine but during daylight there is another circuit that is hot for the Gear position display but it is not hot after it gets dark. So I think I need a new power source. I thought about running a power wire off each source but figure it might backfeed the other source that is not hot at the time and cause problems.
Any ideas for a good alternate source of power?

oh....I guess I should tell you what it is.
solid pink wire on the harness that plugs into your instrument cluster.
I took a 3" piece of 22 gauge wire, stripped both ends and a 1/2" section in the middle. Then cut the pink wire mid length, stripped those ends. Then I soldered my splice in. Then just solder in a length of power wire from the stripped center section of the 22 gauge wire to your gauges.
double check the solid pink wire though, may be different

oh yeah, its easy to get too as well. Pop your dash off, then 4 7mm hex head bolts take the cluster out. Make sure you depress the the harness clip tang in to release the clip from the cluster, might take some gentle jiggling

I've always found that the driver side fuse box and/or the relay center to be a great source of taps, whether it be ground, constant hot, ignition or dimmer feeds. And the best deal is usually their are plenty of open terminals, so all you need is a wire terminal to hook up - no spliced wires.
