Default P/V clearance

How do you check for piston to valve clearance using putty and what is a safe measurement?

safe? .150 on the intake and .200 on the exhaust.

It is possoble to measure the clearance without pulling the heads off. You can even do it with any cam you want installed. You need a pair of lightweight checking springs and an indicator. Rotate the cylinder you are checking to 10* BTDC and check both. Then rotate to 10* ATDC and check both. That is usually around when the valves might touch the piston. If you want to be really safe, then measure at 5* intervals.
