opinions about buying a wrecked truck
#1
Current mods are in the sig. I have been planing on doing a 4l80e swap into my truck and spraying the 5.3 at least 125.
I found a 4l80e in a local junkyard, but he didn't want to seperate it from the truck. He wants to sell the truck as a whole. Its a 2000 rclb 3/4. 6.0/4l80. The truck has iron heads and was hit in the front, just barely hard enough to bend the frame. The radiator is just touching the clutch fan.
The truck has been parted out. It has no bed or rear end. Comes with 2 okay seats. Basically, its a frame, cab, and smashed front clip. He is wanting 900 for the truck and cant be brought down on the price.
The tranny fluid and oil looked decent in the truck. From his words, "It was bought new by the water company, and wrecked with less than 100k miles. I pulled the cluster to put it in another vehicle." This guy is pretty crooked, so I would only take that with a grain of salt.
I feel like it is a little bit of a gamble. What would you guys do? 6.0 4l80 my truck or just let it go? Also, what would you check on a truck like this to give you a little peice of mind that everything is ok.

This sounds like one you should pass on. Only because the early 6.0's are not as desirable and those companies usually beat the crap out of them and replace what's needed to keep it safe and running. In other words rode hard and put away wet....
If you have the room and feel like it's a decent value for your area then go for it.

...when buying anything from an ex fleet vehicle it's always best to be able to actually see it working...i've done fleet service before and the drivers had zero respect for the vehicles and repairs were usually authorized only when something prevented the vehicle from working. besides that just minimal scheduled maintenance was performed...that said my truck was an ex fleet rig from a construction company i believe and it runs great but i took it for a good test drive before getting it.
