I think that the only difference is that the longer filter holds more oil and has more filter media.

You are correct. The extra filter media and capacity are the real reasons I use this filter. ...although the 1" nut is nice

I believe if you look up a 99NBS 5.3L the chart states the HP2006 however any later than that, it references the smaller filter. I never really understood this except for the possibility of oil drain-back,...but doesn't the K&N's have the anit drain-back technology?

I've considered the AC Delco UPF filters (not sure if it's 44 or 46), but also read of guys liking the K&N 2006 or the Mobil1 206 filter, as well as the Napa Gold which is a Wix filter. I really like the looks of the Amsoil filter, but it's pretty expensive, although I could buy a bunch of them online. I plan to start using Amsoil in the engine FWIW.

(Both the K&N and Mobil1 filters are readily available at the AutoZone a few miles from my apartment).

So whatcha's like and why?
It may seem biased but I would have to choose the AMSOIL filters over the more common ones available. I have a few old (circa 2002) PF59's in the garage and I will continue to use the AMSOIL filters over them.

You will need the EaO64 as the longer version of the truck filter. This is the filter that I run on my Silverado and ran on the Trailblazer when we had it.

Keep in mind the you can purchase in cases of 12 (part # EaO64CS) to save about $1 a filter. Check them out: http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/eao.aspx?zo=1436102
