The big issue isn't the lack of adequate drivetrain, the big offsite is the lack of stability due to the short wheelbase.
Having pulled with a NBS Tahoe with a 5.3, it will move the load just fine. Keeping it straight going down the road is the issue. My 98 K2500 ECLB feels way better, despite being down on power.

Man, I pulled my mustang on an open car trailer half way across the country, and hauled another a friend of mine sold, up through New Mexico, behind my old '03 rcsb. Granted, it was a 4.8 truck, but it had the same wheelbase as you, and not much more power haha. It did fine stability wise.

I towed 5k uhaul trailer for 16hours in my 4.8 5 speed RCSB and a 93 RX7 on a uhaul car trailer from Alabama to Dallas no sway problems but I have coilovers cognito steering reinforcements and load range E tires. Not sure if that helps or not.

Here is a couple of suggestions, get 07+ (new style) front brake calipers and rotors (1" larger diameter rotor) and Hawk LTZ pads, anti-swaybar, brake controler, and load levelers along with a fore mentioned 40K cooler, temp gauge, and class 4 hitch. I towed a 24' enclosed (7400 lbs) with the above and a 6 liter. The 4L60E took a crap at 135000 miles with about 40000+ miles towing. After the 40K cooler temps never got above 165 deg. even going through Virginia, NC,SC on the way to Roebling Road. It may be a little overkill for towing a flat trailer but worked for me towing with a Yukon and open trailer and Escalade ESV and enclosed trailer.
