ok, so any 6.0 from an Escalade or Denali is automatically an LQ9? the chances of finding an SS at the 'yard are pretty slim.
im asking b/c when i call up the salvage yard and ask em what vehicle the motor came out of, i want to be sure its not an LQ4.
LQ4 is just a truck motor?
thanks, CHIP

The LQ4 has a lower compression than the LQ9. Dished pistons vs. flattop. The LQ9 is supposed to have a little bit stronger connecting rod as well. Other than that I think they are the same. I know Denalis and Escalades had LQ9's. All the HD's I checked had LQ4's in them. I bought a LQ4 because I am going FI.

1slowhoe......yep, i want an LQ9 and dont want to bother w/ an LQ4 b/c i dont plan on using a huffer or hairdryer. nitrous is my drug of choice
so if i get a 6.0 out of either a Denali or Escalade its got to be an LQ9?
i kinda doubt the guy answering the phone at the JY will know what the hell an LQ9 is. CHIP

I would say with 99% certainty, with all the threads I have read about LQ4/LQ9, that if you get a Denali/Escalade engine you got a LQ9. I don't think there is any external way to tell. To be 100% sure you would have to sneak a peak at the piston top. Either with a camera through the plug hole or pull the head. If you see the engine while it is still in the SUV then I guess that would be good as well. Also, the LQ9 is gonna cost several hundred more bucks, so if you get it and find out its not a LQ9 you should be able to get your $$ back. P.S. Make sure it has aluminum heads, if it has steel heads then it is a 99/00 engine and will not bolt up to the 01+ trannies due to crank size difference. There is a thread about that on here somewhere.

Denali's DO NOT have the LQ9 engine. They have the LQ4 and are slightly higher rated in the Sierra Denali vs. the Yukon Denali. Only the Escalade, EXT, ESV have the LQ9 and of course the Sierra VHO.
Although i wish the Denali's had one....
PS: If you really want to know the 8th digit on the VIN for a LQ4= "U" and the LQ9= "N"

I guess you better check the VIN or pull the heads before you pay.
