Default lower steering column bearing

Hey guys just curious if anyone else has had to replace the lower steering column bearing? I've read the sticky about the intermediate shaft and replaced it and still have the clunk/rattle. I found after looking under the dash where the intermediate shaft bolts up and goes into the steering column tube theres a little plastic colar with a bearing in it. Well ive replaced it before and the noise quit, but after a few months it comes back. WTF. So has anyone else had this problem?

Is it the green one? The green one is the new one, white is the old design.

I bought the new design intermediate shaft and that one still clunked. I put a grease zerk on the old one, filled it with grease and reinstalled it, no more clunk.

Where the new "bearing" fits into the base of the column, you'll notice it fits loose. That is most likely the source of your clunk. There are some different ideas floating on the Interwebz on how to fix this. Some install the new white bearing and get lucky. Others use a clamp around the column to take out the slack. I bend the tabs of the column slightly and install the new white bearing all at the same time. No comebacks yet.

Here's a link with pics, etc. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/76-...priceless.html

Oh yeah, I also put a hose clamp around the bearing housing. No more clunk from the bearing
