Knocking Noise
#1
I have an '02 Tahoe with the 5.3 and have a knocking noise coming from my engine on start-ups when it has been sitting overnight or for an extended amount of time (6-7 hours). It happens when it is warm or cool out, but seems a bit louder when it's a bit cooler out. It usually lasts for only 30-45 seconds and then goes away. My initial thought is that most of the engine oil has drained back down into the pan and it is having to re-lubricate itself, but I've never experienced this with my other rides.
Any ideas?

My previous 2000 5.3L Silverado didn't start do that until it had 115,000mi.
But it did the same exact thing as you described.
It didn't run any weaker though. It may have started to burn a quart of oil between my 5000 mi oil changes when that knocking began.
It never spit out any blue smoke though.
Put some full synthetic oil in it, and keep going!

I started using Mobil1 and Ive noticed that my piston slap has almost dissapeared. I actually forgot all about it until my serp-belt started squeking and then I was like, whoa, I dont hear that tick! Then I was like, damn, squeky belt. WD-40 hooked that up.

Yeah, mine just turned 117K. Good to hear that others have had similar experiences. I have considered an oil additive or switching to a synthetic. One person said Mobile1, any other suggestions?
