F___ing BP! I went to a strange station to fill up. It's bad enough that they sold me about two extra invisible gallons, but by the second stoplight after leaving the station, I have to be careful with the throttle because of low-rpm rattle. It must have been regular in the premium pump. By the time I made it to the station with 100 octane (race gas), I had room for 4 gallons, all is well now.
I need a portable motor research setup. Maybe a 4-sroke leaf blower motor with a head modified to adjust the compression ratio. Put an ounce in, start it, and turn the dial until it knocks. Of course the numbers around the dial would read octane.
What does everybody else do when you get a bad tankful?
Should I accept that I'm going to have to carry a can of toluene or other when I go on a trip?

 

toluene? ive heard of that but not exactly sure what it is? i have never gotten bad gas, must be a midwest thing

 

Toulene is a paint thinner,it works well as a octane booster,you do need a pretty healthy dose of it to make a big difference in octane.About 5 gallons of toulene added to 20 gallons of 91 octane will yeild 25 gallons of 96 octane.

that it does..... is paint thinner even a hydrocarbon? does it have the combustion properties of gas? couldnt it be making your engine run alot hotter and probably would have a different air to fuel mixture needed in order to be run correctly and safely

 

Not just paint thinner but nail polish remover...I cant stand the stuff when the GF uses it. I would never put it in my tank.
Why not just use some Lucas or ?

 

Toluene has been used for years in gas motors.
It is a good way to increase octane.
Depending on your supplier it can be cost effective, or not.

It is not harmful to your engine.
Tulene is present in the gas you buy every other day at the pump.
Many off the shelf octane boosters contain toluene.
It is a popular additive in the racing croud (of several sports)
