Default I chased down today!

So I'm leaving work, and I drive pretty slow since they've been doing some construction in the area. When I get on to a bigger street, I decide to give it a little gas. I'm cruisin' along at about 50mph , when I hit a pothole. Ooops. It was a new pothole from the recent rains, but when I hit it, I heard a loud pop. I then had the distinct feeling something flew off. I don't know why, I had nothing in the bed and I wasn't hauling anything.

But when I looked in my rearview, I see my spare tire at about eye level, right behind me! Holy hell! I keep my foot in it, and the damn thing is chasing me down the road. All the while its bouncing about 5-6ft in the air.

It starts to wander off to the right toward some houses. At this time I'm looking at it out the passenger window. Decision time:
A: Let it go into some one else's property and pay for their damages.
B: Take it out with my truck before I have to buy someone a new front door.

I chose B, and I proceed to run it down. As I'm heading toward it, it instantly changes direction and starts to head back into the road. I look around, and nobody's behind me, but the light up ahead turned green and people are starting to come at me.

By now the tire is just rolling as it starts to cross the street. I block both lanes with my truck as it starts to cross. At this moment I decided to try to tap the tire with my bumper to knock it over. I ease up on it, until its out of sight. I'm sure I hit it, so I wait a few seconds.......

And there it goes, down a freakin' side street heading toward more houses and cars. I said that's it!! I gunned it, caught up to it, slammed on the brakes, threw it in park and ran it down on foot. I had to practically tackle the damn thing and dirty my clothes. But at least I stopped it.

Damage sustained:

Broken spare tire cable (culprit), I lost the little spring and washer, and it slightly bent my "custom" license plate frame.

I heard a little boy yelling at me about 200yards away. He's running toward me with the bracket that holds the tire up by the rim.

What a way to end another Monday.

Had the same thing happen to me in my slammed s-10 about 16 years ago only it lifted the back end of the truck about a foot off the ground as i watched it roll right behind me towards the curb.Scared the out of me.thank god there wasn't to much damage done to your truck or even worse it hitting a car or house.

i can only imagine what that scene looked like and see the other drivers' faces while they drove by watching you tackle a tire.

That's pretty funny. I'm just glad it didn't happen to me... YET!

Just be glad it was your spare and not one you were driving on! My brother has been in 2 different vehicles when one of the tires broke off and past them! Once in my grandmother's suburban and a second time in a friends Nissan.

This afternoon, I will be checking my spare tire cable.

Thats a good one.

Seems the spare tire cables are not meant for bumps. We have a couple hundred duramax trucks here at work and I think most of the tires have been relocated to the bed.

I couldn't of chose option C, because there were a bunch of witnesses. The little boy that gave me the bracket had about 5 friends with him. And then there were the people that came out in front of their house to see what all the noise was about.

To add insult to injury, the little boy, hands me the bracket and says...."You need to get some better bolts man." I just got told by a 9 year old how to build my truck.
