For personal use, no...but if it's a big trailer it would be safer behind a dually.

Diesels aren't for everyone. If you tow often or long distance, then sure it's the way to go. For some it's hard to justify the extra costs of a diesel if you only need a heavy puller a few times a year. Like my dad, he only drives the big block if he's hauling seed trailers at harvest/planting, irrigating, moving cattle or in wet weather. The rest of the time it sits in the barn and he putts around in his V6 half ton.

Yeah- he doesn't take it out very often- the 5th wheel, but he will take the truck to work sometimes, especially in incliment weather..............

I personally have never seen an 8.1 in anything newer then a 2005. The engine made pretty low numbers, 340 hp and 500 and some ft lbs I believe but it pulled with babe the blue ox. In fact in a lot of cases they will flat out pull a duramax. I know the 8.1 is the preferred power plant in the work horse (RV) chassis. There is simply no comparison as far as raw brute power goes between the 6 liter and 8.1. I wouldn't even consider a 6 liter in anything if an 8.1 was also an option. They get within 1-2 mpg of each other anyway.

330hp@4200rpm 450 lb/ft @3200rpm.

the 8.1 was dropped from 3/4 and 1 tons in the GMT900 trucks. The GMT900 NNBS trucks never saw the 8.1, the 2007 GMT800 NBS trucks still had teh 8.1 available.

It is still available in c/k4500 trucks is low and high power options.

LRW 325hp@4000rpm 450 lb/ft@2800rpm
LRZ 295hp@3600 rpm 440lb/ft@3200
