Default How does the computer calculate distance on the odometer?

My speedo is about 15mph for some reason on the retune I got from Allen guess he hit the wrong button or something. I have put about 400 miles on teh new motor according to the odometer but it just dawned on me that the speedo is off by quite a bit. If the computer uses the signal off the VSS which sends a signal to the speedo telling it how fast Im going then I have really traveled further than 400 miles. Can anybody confirm or deny this that knows for sure? Its kind of a big deal since Im breaking in a new engine.

the odometer is all part of the cluster and is fed from the same signal as the speedo. if one is off they will both be off.

that being said i have never given any of my motors more than 100miles of break in before hiting them prety hard and maybe 200miles before going full boost.

There are two items in the programming that can throw off the speedometer. Gear ratio and tire diameter. If either of those were changed. . . .

If you want to test how much your speedo is off, get a stopwatch, set the cruise to 60mph and use the highway mile markers. Do a one mile, two mile and five mile test. Then do the same thing at 70mph. This will give you consistent and good times to start with.

I was running 60 accroding to the speedo and the speed limit is 70 and was running right behind cars in teh fast lane so I think its 15mph off not a big deal Ihave a radar detector and cb radio for the cops.

Parish yeah I have already been on it hard probably 8-10 times and played around some it used a little oil since 40miles to now 400 on the odometer so we will see what happens every time I stop for gas Ill check the oil level on it hopefully it will stop. If anything I have an oil leak somewhere I think cause there isnt any blue smoke coming out of the tailpipe anymore at first there was like within the first 100 or so miles but not anymore now its just black from running rich like Allen tuned it. This has finally put me over the edge I want HPT as soon as I get a bigger radiator and efans on this thing so I can start tuning it myself so I dont ahve to depend upon someone else this sucks and the computer is locked so I couldnt get CurtD to adjust the tc lockup setting or my misfire count

Just be sure to get Allen to leave your computer unlocked when he tunes it next time, if you're planning to get HPT. Most mail order custom tuners will leave them unlocked if you ask, after giving you the "we're not responsible (warranty-wise) for changes YOU make" and the "agree to keep anything you learn from looking at my tune confidential" speeches. At least, that's how Westers was with me.

The guy before me put white face gauges in my truck and the speedo is about 7mph off, would that cause my odo. to read low??? It seems like it is cuz im oinly gettin like 180 miles per 20-22 gallons and that is driving nice!

If it's off because of needle placement, your odometer should be fine.

9mpg isn't much, but then again I don't know what a 2500HD w/6.0 would get, normally.
