Default GM Techs please respond...

...I am about to change my AC Compressor, and I will obviously have to recharge the system with freon. Chiltons manual says 3 lbs of freon (i think, I have to double check), my question to you guys is how many 16oz. cans of froen does it take to fill the system? I don't intend on bringing the truck to anyone, how many ounces of freon does to system take to fill from empty?

Thanks guys.

16oz=1lb

3lb=3cans

If it takes 3 cans...It would really work best to take do the work yourself and then take it somewhere and have them put it on thir AC machine and let them pull a good vacuum on it(to get all the moisture out of the system where you opened it) and then add new oil and recharge it.

you need to double check your amount of freon, 3lbs sounds a little high to me. But you do need o pull a good vacum on it. Can I ask why you are replacing it???

I tried to go by your name that you have a 03 silverado...if so, it would need 1.76lbs of freon NOT 3lbs. plus a couple ounces of oil.

I agree....3lbs sounds off to me, unless your doing this on on a suburban with rear air. You will want to pull a good vac on the system to get the moisture/remaining freon out as well.

you are right, its an 03 Silverado SS, it does have rear air, but not like the suburban rear air, I don't think. On the amount, I don't think that 16oz per can jives with the 3lbs thats in the book. I don't know. Maybe it would be best to have someone fill it. How much does that usually cost?

Did the ACcompressor put metal in the system??? IF it did you deff. need to flush it out and replace the orfice tube and accumulator. I would do as the other guys said and get somebody to pull a good vaccum on it. You can always jump the low psi switch to get the freon to get sucked in. 4 or 5 ozs of oil in the compressor and 2 16oz cans of freon will be fine, is the a/c label on the shroud gone?? It has the actual amount on it. if you have to flush it put some oil in the accumulator also.

how would I know if there is metal in the system? I wasn't going to change the accumulator, even though everything I have read said to. what originally happened (according to GM) is the clutch fan went bad and stressed the crap out of the compressor, bending a valve inside. how a mechanical fan can do that is beyond me, but I replaced the fan with efans and now have to do the compressor, its starting to warm up in florida.

Once you open the lines your never going to get it very cold without running the vaccum on it. Most places around here charge about $20 a pound for the refrigerant.
