Gas Gauge Periodically goes to Empty then comes back
#11
Mine does it....has been for about 4 years now. I've pretty much gotten used to it by now.
When I fill it up, it goes to empty, then jumps to full. Stays correct until about 1/2 tank, then it drops to zero. After a while, it will slowly start inching up to the correct spot. Cut the key off, and restart......it is at zero again.

weird.... once my tank gets down to under a 1/4 it will sometimes fall off to E and then bounce back up to where it should be... i just assumed the tank isnt baffled and sometimes i notice a change in fuel level just by parking on an incline/decline...

Yeah guys...pretty much everyone of us has probably got a defective Feul Level Sensor in our vehicles....as long as it's a GM product.
It's a primitive design, using resistance on an open element rheostat type sender card.
They should have used some of their ":new" technology and designed a better unit than the one we have. IT's pitiful.

Mine was bad when I bought the truck. I pulled it out and found the little contact fingers broken/worn off. I got another pump assy off ebay and found that it also kinda acted up, though the contacts were fine. I just bent the contacts some so as to put more pressure on the board at all times, and I havent had so much as a glitch since (9 months).
I was smart enough to go ahead and replace the stock pump with a walbro while I was in there, after going through 4 pumps in 2 years on my 99 denali. I also made an access door in the floorpan under the rear seat/carpet, to keep from ever pulling the damned tank. Now I can get at my pump in literally 5 minutes! I understand why the pickup guys cant do this, but it's a MUST for an SUV owner.

My gas gauge is just a tool for a false sense of hope on how much fuel my truck eats. The low fuel light is the signal that my truck just stalled and i'm coasting down the road.
Are there any aftermarket solutions?

lol so umm i had just previously posted on how my truck didnt really have any problems with fuel reading except when the tank got real low... well i just made my drive back from home (grand junction colorado) to school (golden) which was about 260mi. the tank was full when i left and when i got here it is still at 3/4 of a tank.... i only have a 25 gallon tank... damn that was some good gas mileage..... wtf is wrong?
