Default Fuel Pump Replacement

I'm looking to change out my fuel pump on my '99 silverado w/ 5.3L. The pump is starting to whine really bad and the fuel level every now and then will read empty after I just got done filling the tank. Anyways would you know how hard this job is? Is it pretty simple? What is the part number for the pump? I'll run the tank as empty as possible but is there any other things I should be concerned about? Any tips?

Should I just take it into the dealership? How much will they charge for this job?

make sure to get a oem fuel pump. its easy to do, just slide under your truck and take 8 bolts out of the bed, take you gas filler neck loose and bend it down out of the way, unplug your wiring harness under the back of your bed, get a buddy to help lift the bed off, then just swap out the pump assembly. i've taken my bed off at least 5 times and it can done in 10 mins

or you could go ahead and swap to a walbro in tank while your at it. probably cheaper than oem too.

replace the sending unit inside of the tank to fix the gas guage issue.

Get a walbro 255lph in tank for about $110 buks, will need some slight mods but nothing bad, make sure to get high pressure hose and good clamps. Factory replacement is $400 plus labor. Have fun

stay with an oem pump unless your going for 350+rwhp. i've had good luck with delphi, just please stay away from airtex brand (advance auto, autozone, etc.) everyone i've seen lasted less than a few months.

the dealership will rip you off, something like 8-900 for it done, I would buy the OEM pump and do it yourself, if you have help I would take the bed off, if you dont I just ran it as low as possible, dropped the tank and did it that way by myself, not too bad but its a bit ackward putting it back.

Yea, there are two main methods, some guys like to remove the bed while others drop the tank...or you can do what MangledGMC did and cut an access hatch in your bed if you plan on getting to the fuel pump alot lol

Dropping tank is the easiest. We use Napa Pumps all day long here at the shop and never have them fail. Also get a new Harness is applicable

Yea, I like dropping the tank myself, especially since I usually like to work alone, and the tank can come down with a floor jack and a piece of plywood. I've gotten used to dropping tanks through the years (working on cars at the dealership), that it's just kinda second nature to me and I'm comfortable doing it that way. Plus, there's no chance of scratching the bed like that.
