The first oil change I did on the new motor I put in the car looked about the same. Car now has about 2000 more miles of hard driving on it and runs just fine. I think you should be ok.

I concur normal. I'm always one to change oil at 500 on a fresh engine.

I got in an argument with a guy at ford dealer over changing oil at 500 mi on a new ford engine we had put in some time ago. His argument was oil change was good until 5K using motorcraft oil and filter which they had used.

My ideology is simple oil is cheap and all that new metal has to go somewhere while everything is wearing in.

GM Performance Parts instructions for break-in of a new crate motor: run conventional oil with a bottle of GMPP assembly lube for first 50 miles, then drain; new filter with conventional oil for the next 500 miles, drain; new filter and preferred oil, conventional or synthetic, and you're good to go.
