Default engine oil additives

OK I know this will get some varied responses- but does anyone have actual experience and feedback on the various oil additives and if they are worth anything? My 8.1- a slightly different animal than the 5.3 or 6.0, burns about a quart between changes which is normal for these engines. I was thinking about trying a quart of something- truck has 77K, does some mild towing periodically. I have to get an oil change tomorrow so I was thinking I would leave it a quart low and put in some additive maybe. I remember back in the day slick50 was a big deal- and that's about the last time I paid any attention to that kinda stuff.

Rev x is a popular additive with the ford diesel guys. Helped my diesel with mileage and cold start issues

You might try a Lucas oil additive, or a Rislone additive. Both of those companies make pretty good products. Most of that stuff is snake oil, but they're both rather cheap and have seen the Lucas oil stabilizer remedy problems on customers vehicles in the past.

Also, if that engine has a PCV valve, I would change it.

No pcv valve on the mighty 8.1 liter. One of the reasons for oil consumption. I've never seen any GM big block not eat oil.

I just like running a good synthetic oil, but have used Lucas and BG EOA on some vehicles in the past, FWIW. We used to add a can of BG EOA at our 5k interval services when I was a Toyota tech, and didn't have any problems with the vehicles that came in regularly, but since they came in regularly, they probably would have been fine either way.

At times we've tried stuff like STP and Slick50 as a band aid on high mileage vehicles and actually reduced some noises and smoke issues, so I guess that some oil additives have their place.

Seafoam, it's the only thing that will EVER go in any engine of mine, rather it's added to oil or fuel, anything from chainsaw to boat motor. But, I think oil additives are a waste of time. Better spent would be to add the seafoam to the fuel.

More important than running an additive, is changing your oil regularly with a quality motor oil. Do that, and you're golden.

Seafoam has no form of alchohol in it, and combats the harse effects of Ethanol in fuel. It's better than Stabil and everything else. I know this for a FACT. I know you're running Diesel, but still good stuff.

When you can explain to me how adding seafoam to his gas will help his oil consumption, I'll believe you.

And the 8.1L is a BBC gas motor, not the 6.6L duramax diesel...
