Default Drag racing tips.

A neighboring small town is having thier annual 1/8th mile street drags this weekend. This will be the first time that I've ever been in a legal drag racing situation (lame, I know ). What are some helpful tips so I don't make a complete *** out of myself? The strip is actually a side street and only 1 vehicle will make a pass at a time. Also, just guessing, what kind of times to expect? Thanks!

Ok you're gunna get nervous no matter what, but here it goes.

When you pull up, drive around the water of possible
then, after pulling around the water what I do is stall to about 1500 and just nail the gas for a bit and let the tires turn over a few times just to clean the crap off em. Afterwards slowly pull up till you see the 1st staging light come on. Wait for the other car to pull up to the staging light, then after he hits the 1st light, you pull up to the 2nd staging light. This is just out of courtesy. Then once you are fully staged, brake stall to wherever you get the best lauch and wait. If its a sportsman tree it will be 3 yellows then the green will show. As soon as you see that 3rd yellow come one, put the pedal to the metal. By time everything reacts you will be lauching while the green light is on. It sounds weird at 1st. But as soon as you brain says "oh look, the 3rd yellow is on" just floor that sucker. Then your golden after that.

If its a Pro tree, where all 3 yellows light up at the same time.. thats a little more confusing because after you stage, all 3 yellows come one at once, then the green. As soon as you see that yellow flash of lights (all three at the same time) just nail the pedal.

Hope this helps somewhat.

my first run in the truck i got a bit excited and i just hit the pedal. i had crazy wheel hop but i ignored it not wanting to let off the throttle i ended up with a 15.9 this was with a UPD and on 20's. by the end of the night i got down to a 15.1 so just dont get too excited dont be afraid to feather the throttle youll end up running fast than just riding it out.

Thanks for the tips guys and I'm sure I'll be nervous.

Like I said, one nice thing is that it's a one car at a time run since it's on an actual city street. One of the people in the club hosting the drags said they "just got a nice pro tree" so I'm assuming it's the 3 yellow then green deal.

I know I was more nervous at the tree than I ever had in one of my dirt cars.

DOn't let off until you CROOSSSS the traps. That's a common thing for new guys .. I did it too. Last time I was at the track the announcer said something about all the rice letting off WAY before crossing the finish line. It took me 2 times to realize I was doing that too.

Play with the launches do what works best for you. Avoid the water box and lengthy burnouts on street radials. They do no good.

Turn the AC off too. It drips water so keep it off from the first spot in the staging lanes on.
