i need to find out what the little thing that keeps the door open is called. my passenger side works like its supposed to but the driver side will not stay open.

I believe it is the door limiter...I have replaced mine on the driver's side to get rid of an annoying squeak when I opened and closed the door. GM has a new design out that goes away from a metal bar to a coated bar that keeps the squeaking down to nothing. Of course I don't have the part number in front of me, but any decent parts counter help at a stealership can help you. I think the part is around 20 bucks each.
