The only way to reduce the price of Fuel is to first reduce your dependency on it. The oil market is economically the hardest market to reduce the price on because of our increasingly high demand for fuel. The amount of oil on earth is limited and dramatically being depleted.
So we have less and less oil available and our needs for it are just getting higher and higher.
If you want to Lower prices, find other means of transportation. Instead of driving to the store for a soda, ride a bicycle or walk. Try to get as much stuff done in as few trips as possible so you do less driving.
This would still only be a temporary solution because the prices will keep going up over time until there isn't any oil left to pump. But it would cause you to use less, fill up less, and save more money.

If you think that the US is a free market economy, you have absolutely no business discussing this topic.
A perfect example would be your congressional district. Outside of the federal system, your district gets more federal funds and subsidies than any other district.
And, it also has a very high median income, which, if this were really a free market economy would not be happening.
If you want another example, you can also look at the oil industry, which enjoys enormous federal subsidies and tax breaks, even while making the largest profits in history.
But since you know so much about economics, you already knew this and were just kidding, right?

i dont know if this was said yet but this is my opinion only!!!!!
not buying gas on one day wont do anything to the oil companies, it just assures that they will have a really good tomorrow
if you want lower gas prices in your area you need to rally the town together and commit that nobody buys gas from the 2 largest fuel companies in your town, this will benifit the small guy and force them to be competitive against eachother and the bigger name stations will drop thier prices to get thier volume customers back, and so one to an extent it will eventually even out less than the current average.
