It would never happen though. Not everyone has internet access so not everyone has access to an idea like this. Plus, everyone has to buy gas, some can go longer than others, but eventually you have to buy it, the day before, the day after or whenever. I personally have to gas up every 4th evening or 5th morning, and I pretty much just drive to and from work with no side trips.
Technically, a gas out day could happen, and they could just double the prices the very next day and people would be forced to buy gas at double the price, not everyone is going to be able to go without gas long enough. Its either don't buy gas and hurt the oil but loose your job or buy it and deal with it.
I personally don't see any help with the gas prices until the government steps in and takes action. Crude oil prices (last I checked) were about $10 a barrel less then they were last year when gas prices were this high. Demand hasn't dropped any, but probably isn't much higher than last year, summer vacation time is coming up, and they can get away with charging what they are. Either new petroleum facilities need to be built, US drilling needs to be stepped up, and US reserves need to be tapped or long term, large scale cutbacks on crude oil all together will help, but a single day no buy gas will have no impact whatsoever.

Gasoline prices are based on supply and demand. The only way to lower the prices is to either increase the supply, or decrease the demand. Unless the country uses significantly less gasoline for an extended period of time, we will not have any affect on lowering the price of gasoline.

And you know unfortunately, we as a nation are only one small hurricane away from $4 a gallon. The oil companies want it there and are just looking for an excuse.
Sorry, someone had to say it.

I would have to agree that one day won't make a difference. Same as the people that say don't buy exxon or mobil. I have a couple of exxon tanks by the house, and a lot of smaller gas retailers get their gas from them. So exxon and mobil still make their money.
And if you think gas prices are regulated their not really. I was in Minnesota two months ago, and saw something I wouldn't believe. We left the hotel at 8am gas at the corner store was $2.13. We came back at lunch it was $2.45. We came back at dinner and it was $2.28. This happened the entire week we were there. It never stayed the same price all week. The most it jumped was 40 cents in 4 hours. We asked the attendant at the station and he said it happens all the time. Yet, I am sure that he paid the same amount for the $2.13 gas as he did for the $2.45. My opinion he was gouging people.
I've heard that it will be $4 by the end of summer. Will I get rid of my 12mpg truck, NO. I am considering getting something else that will become my daily driver though.
