Default Custom Tune in DFW? Local tried to fill me full of it.

I posted a few weeks ago about a hpp3, but i had some other stuff money had to go to. Now I'm trying to decide whether i should ls1edit (though i'm not sure about some of the stuff) or have some shop in dfw area do it. I talked to a guy that just came into town that does diesel stuff. I was not impressed. He started on this long speech about how him and his buddy started superchips (dunno if its true or not). What really turned me away, was the fact that when i walked in i told him i had a 5.3, and he acknowledged that, but asked if it was throttle body (like pre 96 style.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> ). He also said that you couldnt change the shift points with a hpp3, or diablo or whatever, you had to 'custom tune the computer' or the transmision would make up for it. He also said that the tranny would make up for doing a billet, or vette servo....
I could go on about all the **** he told me, like ls1edit is junk, and how my rings are shot, because there is some gunk behind the tb blade and in the intake. which i thought was just the 1way check vavle or something i need.

Anyways, should I just get a used hpp3, save some dough and get ls1edit (wouldnt i need atap aswell?) or pay someone to do it.

If you want some more wonderful insights he gave me let me know....

Dont listen to that guy.

Your choice. It depends on your long term goals. Ar you going to keep the truck for a while? If so, a custom tune or Edit would be good. If not, you can take a HPP3 off and sell it. Edit is better if you make lots of changes that HPP3 cant, like injectors, timing, MAF, engine size, idle speed, ... A custom shop will get you tuned right for your current mods, but if you make major changes later, you'll have to go back and have them fix it.

I looked at AMS and they have a dyno tune for 470 or there abouts....

Pretty much want shift points, rev limiter, tq man., and whatever else i can. I will probably run some juice on it if pretty soon after i get a good tune.
Think i should just get a hpp3?

I doubt that AMS can tune your truck. The LS1 edit tuner version for trucks is several thousand dollars. Not many shops will drop that kind of money for truck tuning. I don't know of any.

Your best bet is to buy the cable and pay AMS to dyno tune it for you. Then you get the benefits of having your own cable, yet you also get a good tune with air fuel readings. Plus you might just learn a thing or two about tuning do it that way.

Basically, yes. I think a professional tuner with a wideband, maybe a Tech2, etc.., would do a beter job of tuning your truckcorrectly the first time. Then you have the cable to make minor changes as you need to, like gears, tire size, shift points, etc...

That is in the perfect world. I would rather save my money and struggle through the tuning myself.
