Default circuit board in rear view mirror 99-07'

What does the little board inside of my rear view mirror do? The plastic crap crumbled and i have a little board hanging from my rearview. I assumed that it tells the mirror NWSE or temperature but when I unplug it it still displays the temp and compass. i'm considering clipping the wire off at the back of the mirror.

If it's hanging by the wires, why would it stop working?

i dont care to see that little circuit board dangling there. I'm curious what would stop working if i clipped the wires off at the back of the mirror.

I don't have time to read all of the words, just the ones that suit my answer.

This is dependent on your truck year. I had this happen to me too back in the day and there was no way to glue that sucker back on. Honestly I am pretty sure that it controls the compass only. My 99 only had compass so that's all I can guess.

the compass still seems to function when I unplug it. I haven't driven around with it unplugged though. I'm thinking it might be for the auto dim. I don't need that crap with my 5% tint.

I clipped the wire. It was for the compass.
