I am pretty sure you can, check the stickers under the hood and if it says R134 they yes you can buy it at an auto parts store without a license, if it says R12 then you have to have a license. Since I don't know what kinda vehicle your talking about I am just guessing.

You can use a recharge kit but you need to know how much freon to put in it, the weight of the freon is more important than the pressure.

ditto on the last comment.
and it is better to evacuate it and pull a vacume on the system then recharge it.

yeah you can. If you have a r134 system, they have quick connect couplers instead of screw, you can buy a guage set from harbor freight for around $60 or you can buy a quick charge kit from the parts store that has a low pressure guage. To do it the right way you need to pull a vacume on the system to get a complete fill. I have done this rigging up vacume lines to the intake and reving the engine and when it decelerates shut off the line going to the low side suction, if you know what I mean. You can get as much as 20" of vacume that way. That is using a guage set. Proper way is with a vacume pump and pull it down to 28". But you can get one that uses a venturi tube type suction for harbor freight for $10. That is what I use. Need a guage set though. If you just need to juice one up a little just get a quick charge kit from the parts store.

if you need to charge or top off your truck a/c then there is a leak. You need to find the leak before you charge the system, leaks never seal themselves, they just get worse. Besides, if the leak continues, the oil that lubricates the entire system, expecially the compressor, will be trashed.

If you use the r12 drop in replacements it can eat away the rubber hoses in the system/or softin them up. I beleive 93 or 94 was the last year for the 12 in cars. New cars are 134. Also if it isn't blowning cold and it is new it just might be over filled. Also like said above if it is your truck and it is warm if it isn't overfilled it is a leak. I don't think the car needs to be reved when filling up, put the ac on max so it keeps the compressor engaged, it will fill fine. Unless you are using the 1 pound cans of stuff gauges and a scale will be needed to do it right.. Good luck

If the system has been opened up to the atmosphere, you want to pull it into a vacuum to boil out any moisture that may have accumulated while it was open, or you could end up with bigger problems than just poor ac performance.
