Default antifreeze in the oil pan???

my buddys 4.8 with 180k just drained a gallon of antifreeze out the oil pan. it runs good and doesnt miss so i dont think its a head gasket, but how else can he be losing so much antifreeze into the block? cracked water jacket or oil galley?

I'd lean more towards a cracked block. I can't believe it's still running after that. The coolant is heavier than oil and that much would displace enough oil that the oil pickup tube would be sucking up coolant instead of oil.

If it was a bad head gasket I would think that you would be pressurizing the cooling system with cylinder charge, rather than draining that much coolant out of the oil, but really either is a possibility.

thats the thing, it runs good, doesn't miss. and yea the antifreeze was the last thing to come out of the pan, it was just sitting on the top of the oil. he has to fill the water up everyday but the oil dipstick never really changes??
