My ac unit had been making a clunking noise for a few weeks, but only when I initially turned it on. It gradually got worse and then it threw a belt. Do I need to replace the ac unit or can I rebuild it? The truck has an underdrive pulley on it, does anyone know what size the belt is? This truck is no longer my DD, but I'd like to fix it.
Thanks,

Don't know of anybody that rebuilds them. Replace it. Problem is when they go out they put a lot of crud in the system. You may and should replace other parts in the system along with it. Dryer and orifice at least. Flushing will be a must also.

The compressors are not rebuildable by the consumer. If there is a internal compressor failure it puts metal through the entire system. AC shops have a special machine that will flush all of it out. I have one at my shop and do it all the time. And always replace the orifice tube, accumulator, schrader valves.

Check the tensioner first. If it is okay, then you should have a certified A/C tech replace the compressor. They will have to add the correct amount of compressor oil, replace the oriface tube, flush metal out of the lines, then recharge the system with refrigerant. You may be capable of doing part of this work yourself, but the compressor needs to be off to add the oil. The lines need to be disconnected to flush them. You really won't save money. Not to mention, you probably won't get them to warranty anything if you did part of the job.

It's not really a matter of being good with a wrench and replacing parts. AC work requires special equipment and knowledge to be done right. Do some research and find a shop that can do it right for you. Money well spent.
