Default 4th door conversion

Okay this may seem dumb...
I have a 3 door 2000 Silverado and it bugs the hell out of me. I really wanted a crew cab but this fell in my lap for a ridiculous price. Now I know why. Has anyone converted one of these into a 4 door ext.cab or do they just change the cab? If they change the cab what is done about a VIN? AAaaannndd GO!

Would be easier to swap the cab.

The amount of labor to perform the conversion would be cost prohibitive. It would also require the side of another cab.

If you work for free and have nothing but time on your hands I guess it could be worth it for you.

Different states have different rules on how to handle the vin or the transfer of it.

This is pretty much what I had figured but even DPS here cannot tell me how the VIN requirements are.
