2003 Tahoe starting problem

2003 Tahoe starting problem
Question for a friend.
His 03 Tahoe is hit or miss on starting. He replaced the batt with a new one. Imediently after that it still would not even turn over. But as soon as you jump it it will start as it did with the old battery. All the connections are good according to him. He has not checked the starter connection itself. Any ideas?

I'll bet he ends up with a failing fuel pump... I know it sounds odd, but don't ask how I know 
get him to make note of the sound of the fuel pump priming, next time it doesn't start tell him to listen for it
