the 2500 HD has a lot beefier frame, the 1500 HD is basically the 1999-2000 2500 frame

there's a thread already about this but they are basically the same but the 2500hd has a beefier frame behind the rear axle and the option of a diesel and big block + allison trans and bigger rear ends for them

1500Hd=2500LD

So the 1500HD is a good truck...the only thing I will be pulling is a race car so I am not that worried about it. The truck that I am about to buy was advertised as a 2500 but the VIN says that it is a 1500. Didn't really matter to me, I was just curious about the exact differences. Thanks

the 1500HD has a 9.5" rear end, the frame after the axle is smaller (like it matters back that far), its has a 3129lb payload vs. the 2500HD 3600lb. They are very much alike as far as towing and all, and have identical breaks. Mine runs 2500rpms at 70mph though with 4.10's. I have no doubt it would pull a house. lol

Here is a link to a previous thread with pictures:

I was confused because someone once convinced me that GM used only two frames, a light duty (1500) and a heavy duty... turns out there are 3 variations of frames. (that I know of) The 1500HD/2500LD are the same, and are identical to the 2500HD frame from the front bumper to around the rear axel. I just can't figure out why GM did this... are they saving that much money in that last 3 foot of frame by using less material?

Yes max GCWR is the same, but max trailer weight at the hitch is different thus the larger rear sub frame.

1500HD Max. Trailer Weight (lbs.) 8,300 w/ 3.73 10,300 w/ 4.10

The 2500HD was designed around the duramax and allison transmission.
2500HD Max. Trailer Weight (lbs.) 12,000 w/3.73

Both non fifth wheel.
