Default 04 av 5.3 help

OK so I lost all oil pressure the other day. I'm planning on replacing my oil pump thinking that its the culprit but are there any other things I should check first. Also do I need to lower the oil pan to remove the oil pump?

Or should I just start at the oil pickup screen?

What were you doing when it lost psi? Any mods. How many miles. Have you checked with a mechanical gauge?

It's possible the pickup tube o-ring just broke, or the pump could be bad. You can find out both by taking the pump off.

You need to lower the oil pan about 1" to get to the pickup tube bolt on the oil pump. Don't drop it in the pan either. If you have a 4x4 then you're in for a world of hurt, cause the front diff has to move or you have to unmount the engine to get enough clearance to drop the pan completely.

It is perfectly possible to change the pump with all the bolts taken out of a 4x4 pan though without needing to drop the axle.

I have had very good luck with taking the stock crappy pickup tube o-ring, tossing it in the trash and getting 2 new oil-safe o-rings and putting them on the pickup tube. I have gotten a little more pressure out of the pumps this way. (1 ring = 40PSI idle, 2 rings = 50-55psi idle, with 75psi at 2500rpm)

OK so new oil pump and new red o ring. Still getting low oil pressure indicator, and lifter noise. Someone told me that a clog can form in the lifter valley and not allow oil through. Which in turn blocks the sender. .......anyone ever hear of this or fixed it?

Still looking for ideas. The ticking has gone away but still getting low oil pressure light at idle. I'm going to swap the sensor but I don't think that's it. Anyone ever heard of spun cam bearings or partially clogged oil galleys? On the 5.3s
