The 2wd trans uses a different tailshaft and tailhousing. The 4wd uses a different shaft and no tailhousing as it bolts directly to the transfer case.
And yes, you have to go into the trans to swap the shaft out. But there is a writeup here to do it.

And also, I'm interested in the converter... Lemme know.
