Is there a difference in the newer cranks vs. the older?

The balance is different. If you run the hevier ls2 rods, and newer style pistons with the older pre 05 lq4 crank you will have to add heavy metal to balance.

You are correct, but the beefier rods weigh more so the bodweight on the 05 up, or LQ9 crank is hevier, or drilled less. The ls2/ lq9 style rods weigh ~30 grams more than the earlier style, and the pistons are another ~20g. So the earlier crank would need mallory added to the counter weights to balance with the hevier pistons, and rods.

Mallory is exspensive **** huh.I bought a china crank once for a 383 I put together had to add mallory to balance.Wound up almost spending as much for a forged piece.I think it was $75 oz. and I didn't even get high.
