would a torque converter help? or a gear?

ok i raced a guy from work today and he has a 2001 chevy single cab w/ 5.3L. it's bone stock, doesn't even have exaust yet. anyways we raced from 35mph up. he manualy shifted and he started to pull, like his rear bumpter was even with my front bumper. as soon as i shifted to third i started to pull but he stopped.
when i go from 35 up, my truck feels like a beast. my tires lay a bit of a scratch, and i take off after that it doesn't feel that great. generally when i hit third thats when i start pulling. i was just wondering if a torque converter would help that. i have 3.42 gears could that be the cause of it?

You have a 99 5.3L E/C and he has an 01 5.3L S/C...of course he's gonna pull. The 01's probably put about 225 rwhp stock + the few hundred pounds less to make up the difference to your 243 rwhp. As far as you pulling him in 3rd, he must have let up and you thought you were pulling him....unless you have done a cam swap, but then your dyno #'s would be better. You can go gears or converter, it's up to you. I went converter for the track.
