I can get a 4.8 out of a 2002 gmc for 150 bucks, it has about 90,000 miles on it, the guy said it needs rebuilt because it has a coolant leak, but it ran fine?? Anyways my plan was to buy it, eventually get it bored out to ls1. throw in some forged ls1 rods and pistons, 5.3 crank and maybe some nice heads at some point and replace the 5.3, or am I better of getting a 6.0 from the junk yard for 1000 bucks?

to me it seems to be alot of work would need to be done to get that 4.8 to a 5.7 and it might not make it, from what i hear the block would have to be sonic tested to make sure the cylinders are centered, if they're off you cant bore it to a 5.7. and all of that machine work costs lost of money, and if it cant be bored out to 5.7 the custom pistons will be pricey. imo just grab up a low mile lq4 and its bigger already. and even if it is 1500$ it will probably be less than all the machine work.

FYI if you arent getting special pricing you are looking at $500 just for the machine work on the block (bored, vated and rotaing assembly balanced). You are already have the cost of a 6.0 with no pistons, crank or rods yet. I have researched this thoroughly because I was thinking about doing it and depending on parts you are looking at $1500+ to build it not including outside acessories such as tune, headers, etc. Just my 2 cents.
