to the best of my knowledge the heads are swapable, the valve covers are different b/c of the oil fill, but that's the only difference I'm aware of

They are the same.

Well, its torn apart and I don't see anything that is conclusive. #7 has a slight scratch that you can feel with your fingernail but its smooth to the touch if you use your finger. The other 3 look perfect. Take a look and tell me what you see? Before you guys get stuck on the microscopic scratch remember I had 80psi in all 4 cylinders. Gonna get the head checked tomorrow and see if its screwed. The gasket didn't look bad either.

On a different note...is there a way to pull valve stems off without tearing them up or do I just need to get new ones if I swap springs to a new head?

Just a idea, pull the oil plug and pour some deisel fuel in a cylinder with it at the bottom of its stroke. Then wait a little while and see if the deisel makes it past the rings. then repete for the rest of the cylinders. If this sounds dumb just tell me to go back to

Mic the bores if you can. From the pics looks like some shiney spots at the top of the bore corresponding with the clean areas of the piston.

Before putting the heads back on I would recommend getting new head bolts. I have seen some case where the head bolt actually is longer due to tightening, but that was on a ford.

I will try to get them mic'd.
What would the shiney spots indicate?

I have a set. They are tq to yield so, once you pull them out they are garbage.

Wouldn't the shiny spot represent a wear on the cylinder wall? I have never been on the insides of one of these new motors, can you seen any cross-hatching on the cylinder walls?

The shiny spots look like reflections caused from the camera flash and piston within the curve of the cyl. Have the head checked to see if it is warped. If so have it pressure tested and it that checks out ok i'd reinstall the head but not before finding out what the problem was of course. Carry the gasket with you to the shop and let them look at it. Look for irregularities on the block between the cyls as well. Of course, if you busted a second or third ring land you wouldn't see it from above. I busted a second ring land before and I wasn't noticably down on power and the compression check was perfect but it had a hell of a lot of blowby; so bad that my windshield was getting spattered with oil going down the track. I absolutely hate Hyperpathetic pistons
