Default What the hell just happened?

Today I was driving my truck about to take a right turn onto a 2 lane highway. I had been driving for about 30 minutes so it was up to temp. I go to pull out and give it some gas and it just sputters, I'm pretty low on gas (about 350miles) I start to pump the gas alittle to see if it will just catch and go. It doesn't so I coast off to the same side of the road I was on. (on the shoulder) Then my truck just dies. I try to start it up several times and nothing. Sometimes it will start and sputter like a vaccum leak, but I heard no noise up front.
I get out pop the hood check everythig make sure its ok. I could find nothing unusual. I think well maybe my sender for my fuel pump is bad and I'm really out of gas. I can't figure it out. I keep trying to start it up and keep it running but it's runnign really bad and sometimes wont even fire. The spark plugs are only about 10-15k miles old. I have no clue what it could be.
Then I try and start it up starts up this time like a champ and runs like nothing ever happened. I drove it about 60miles after that with not one problem. So my question is what the hell just happened?

Well, you drove 60 miles after that, so you had at least some gas. I think either you passed some crap through your fuel system or something with fuel or ignition could be intermittent. Closest thing I had to that was an igniter in a car that went bad...I was doing about 70 and it was just like turning off the engine...started to coast onto the shoulder and it went back to normal...that night, driving to work,it died again but that time it was dead for good.
If it's intermittent electrical/electronics,it'll probably happen again and/or get worse.

That's what I was thinking. If you frequently drive that close to empty, you may be getting crud from the bottom of the tank picked up by the fuel pump.

I would probably change the fuel filter, because they are cheap and it just rules one possible problem out. Might also be something wrong with the fuel pump. Just a couple of thoughts.

I had at least some gas in there I don't think that was the problem. The fuel filter is only a few thousand miles old. I've thought it may be fuel pump, but my brothers truck when his went out he had problems starting it for a month or so before it finally went out. I heard these pumps usually go out around 150k miles or so. I'm at about 168 now so I guess it's time.
