Default What happened to this lifter?

I could use some help, I'm not a mechanic. I asked on ls1tech and no one there seems able or willing to help. I recently bought a LH6 that "ran but made noise" from a junkyard. After we took the heads off we found one of the DOD lifters that appears to have fallen apart. I assume these don't just pull apart as none of the others do. I assume this lifter failed and this is not normal? Can someone confirm? What holds these together that would have failed and allowed it to come apart.

After casual inspection we didn't notice any damage to the lifter rollers of the cam. What should I be looking for/at?

Thanks!

Am I missing something here?

One looks like a regular lifter and the other a DoD lifter.

That's two pieces of one lifter. Here is a photo of it together.

It's not pushed all the way together. You can see where the two pieces meet.

Sorry for the sucky photos.

I guess I wasnt looking close enough and the one piece being further back made it look a similar size.

I couldn't tell you why that happened but spring part is almost like pressed into the lifter. Odd that it came apart like that.

I don't have a photo of one of the other DOD lifters but in the first photo the piece in the back slide into the piece in the front until the spring is flush to the end of the other piece.

I can see anything that looks broken or missing that allowed it to come apart by I'm not a mechanic so I don't know what to look for.

I'm thinking the engine noise (I never heard it run) was caused by this. The lower piece of the lifter was probably hitting the plastic lifter tray.

I'd like to use this motor but I need to figure out if anything is damaged and what to do about it. I've got no ideas of the mileage but it looked like that head had been off at one time.

Junk *** DOD lifter they suck they alway's have various problems I've seen 5 or 6 of em in the last 8 years that did exactly as yours did. If bores clean and not scarred and cam looks perfectly smooth then just do a DOD delete on it throw it back together and rock n roll.

Thanks 01WS6/tamu, that's what I wanted to know. I bought this to hopefully use for a swap and it looks like I should be OK. Do you know what holds them together that would have allowed it to come apart like that?

Thanks for taking time to post everyone.
