When you say leave everything else alone; I know you still mean junk the 5sp, correct? Just trying to hammer the point.

Welcome to my life. I have the same engine and drivetrain as you and am considering the 6.0 swap. As for trannies the nv4500 has a granny first. The nv3500 is weak as sh*t. The T56 will not go in without some SERIOUS modifications. There is also the zf s6-650, it's a 6 speed with a granny first. It'll hold 540 (i think) lb/ft and were put in some of the 1 tons I believe. However, finding them isn't easy and buying them isn't fun.

If I go ahead with the swap I'll probably just throw in a little better clutch while I've got it out and just be prepared to replace/rebuild the nv3500 at least a couple of times...

This seems unlikely, I think he forgot to mention the nitrous. Anyway I think I would agree that this trans in 4 wheel drive with a lot of power won't live long. If you're in love with the manual, as I am, then look into some kind of 6-speed conversion first because that will cost plenty. Then once you figure out what you want to do to your motor there will be at least a chance it will hold up for a while. Or you could always say screw it and build up your motor and try to granny-shift but I just could never learn that kind of self-control!
