Default What to do with a 4.8..............

Besides turn it into a boat anchor? Its really not a bad engine, and seems to have potentional. Ive already descreened the MAF, Volant CAI, bypassed the coolant to the TB, and added flowmaster headers. These are all nice bolt ons, but im ready to go internal. Im an experienced mechanic(do this for a living) and feel like I can handle any task.

Id like peoples opinion here that have done the mods Im considering.

1. Cam, I have one picked out, talked to Lunati about a Voodoo. I cant remeber the numbers on the cam, but what else have yall had to do when adding a cam? I know you need new lifters, but have you also replaced the rockers and gone to an aftermarket rocker when doing this?

2. Im going to get a Wheatly tune and would like to remove the torque managment. Ive read this can be done by replacing the servos, different torque convertor and shift kit in the transmission. What brands and part numbers do I need to look for?

3. I would like to have the heads shaved and mildy ported. I can do the port work myself, and already have a machine shop in the area picked out. How far can I safely go, and where do I find a thinner head gasket for this engine?

4. Nitrous? Never dealt with this before, so someone please school me on it.

5. MSD ignition- ive seen kits in summit and jegs for the ls1 which include ignition coils and wires. Will these fit the 4.8 and is it worth the money?

Thanks for the help in advance. Everyone on this site seems very knowledgeable and I look forward to hearing from everyone.

1. you don't have to change to lifters or the rockers

2. you can't remove the TM with servo's or converters or anything like that. go to ebay motors and search for vette servo. get the cheapest one you can find and slap it in. Wheatly will tune a good amount of TM out for you

3. i'm sure some of the sponsors have what you're looking for here

4. HSW has great products for a great price. it's very addicting

5. don't waste your money. i believe parish is still using stock coils on his 1000+hp motor

i agree. if you have the money, bore it to a 5.7, put some forged parts in there and throw a blower on it.

He can bore it to a 5.7L bore size, but he cant bore it to a 5.7L because he has a shorter stroke.

It would make a ~5.2L if he did it though.

Personally, I would find a 6.0L shortblock and swap it in.

for what you would spend on all the work to make a 5.7, which you can't do with that block anyway (you can get close), just get a 6.0. either way, everyone is leaving out that you will have to do computer tuning if you want it to run right.

I'm going to get a good head/cam package and spin the shizzzznit out of it.

Most people say ditch it and get something bigger. I say build the crap out of it, gear and stall the truck and have fun.

Since there are a lot of cats around here giving away their 4.8 after a swap, I was gonna get two or three. One for a 2300lb race car, one for a turbo something, and one for a spare

People dont give much cedit to the 4.8L. I love mine, and plane on building it to a 5.7L. Like to be different.
