Start with a 4.88+, that will make up for the gear loss from the taller tires. Then investigate converters and cams to help you offset all that extra weight you're spinning. If you put 4.88s in your truck as it sits, your gearing will be slightly better than your truck on stock rubber and 3.73s. If you install 5.13s, your gear ratio will be the same as a factory tire with 4.10s. Just doing a gear swap by itself will improve the overall behavior of your rig, on and off the road.

Gears , 2600-2800 converter and a 212/218 or similar cam should help out... 3.73s are killing you

Just regear to 4.88/5.13's. It would be plain silly to do any other performance mods before you regear it, imo.

I run 315/75R16's (roughly 33's) and the 4.56 gear install made it faster than it was stock all the way through the rpm range and got me to right around stock cruising RPMS on the freeway

/\ 315/75-16s are close to 35"(34.6) 285/75-16s are about 33"(32.8). Just FYI. I completely agree with Beatdown Z, and that's what I was trying to say too: the biggest key to restoring your truck's driveability is to rectify your massive gearing issue.

Keep another thing in mind, even re-gearing to a perfect match in cruising rpm’s will not completely restore your trucks performance to stock, as you still have to overcome the massive weight and rolling resistance difference. I would bypass the 4.88’s and go for the 5.13’s as the other guy’s have already suggested.

AS stated above by these guys, You are really doing yourself a injustice by using a stock 3.73. Not only is all that stress gonna snap your Tranny, but its a waste a time with 3.73. You need 4.88s for sure if your scared, with 39's id do 5.13's I had 4.56s on my 35's, and it rev matched perfect to stock.

Once you gear the truck, get a nice 208-212 cam, some 31# injectors and a good tune
