shutting the engine off woulnd't have anything to do with when he starts the truck back up in the morning.

Well there is a little weep hole on the side of your water pump...it could be leaking from there. It is super hard to see, but it is on the drivers side of the pump. My old '99 5.3 did that along with a ton of other broken stuff.
