Default Water Pump seals failed after 6 months, any reason why?

Hey peeps, need help on this...So approx 6 months ago, my factory seals on my Sierra failed. I replaced them with metal gaskets I got from GM after cleaning the hell out of the block and pump surfaces. This week, water started dripping again and upon close inspection, determined that the seals were definitely the cause of the problem again. (not the bearings or the seal assembly in the back). I took the water Pump out again and the metal seals including the rubber look great.

Should I of put some sort of sealant around the gaskets?
Would over-torquing the bolts also somehow cause a leak?

i don't want to go through this every 6 months, especially when I do long road trips with this thing.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks

my gasket was leaking so when I did my cam swap we put some RTV on it to keep the rubber on. Hasn't leaked since.

RTV will probly work. In my experience I bought my truck with it leaking, ended up replacing the water pump and it never happened again. Waterpump was on and off about 3 times and on the 6.0. Just my .02
