Default Valve overlap and you.........

Like the title points to, overlap. Just when I thought I had it all figured out in simply thought keeping away from too much overlap because that acts like a vacuum leak and trashed your low end and what looks like just a little more overlap is actually the square of the degrees more. But the real stick in the mud for me is that tat a certain point one cylinder on the intake stroke actually takes from another cylinder as the 90* firing order of the V8 make this inevitable. So the question is, guys- how much is too much?
The plan is to go LQ4 cam only for a DD with added zing...........

the larger cubes dont mind overlap as much as a 4.8/5.3. How much overlap is the cam you are looking at? I daily drive with 28 degrees of overlap in a 408. sure its not the best daily cam, but i dont mind.

For a DD, shoot for -2 to +2 overlap at the most. Stock cam has something like -6 degrees of overlap or something stupid. Measured at 0.050".

The 1st cam I had, had -10 or -11 overlap. It was a torque monster down low.

The cam I currently have has like +5 I think, it's still torquey but pulls much better up top.

Hmm- guess I oughtta look at the .050 measurements; I'm at -11.5 and -13*. But again, this stealing from another cylinder and contaminating the mixture still has me loosing sleep. SO is it the .050 numbers that I should really focus on? Oh yeah- I'm fixing to go with a TB converter........

You're joking, right?

You have a very, very, basic build with a damn near stock set of requirements for DD use on a stock size engine. Any of the small, common cams will work just fine.

Dont sweat that, the intake runners are long enough that you wouldnt see that happen unless you had an undriveable amount of overlap. Like i said, i daily 28 degrees of overlap @.050. i dont notice it with my stall.
