V-tech Powerband
V-tech; for those that do not speak Honda, V-tech is a way of shifting camshaft profiles at specific rpm(s). Honda has severl variations of V-tech but general the 'big' cam will come on at about 5400 rpm (7000+ red line) What V-tech does for a Honda is is give the little 4 banger 40mpg down low and low emissions AND 100HP per litter up high. Sounds cool, the trade off NO lowend torque!
That being said; My truck had NO power below about 3000 rpm then all of the sudden like magic the the exhaust tone starts to thicken and by 4000 rpm you fell the truck start to pull harder. If I didnt know any beter I would swear I had some sort of variable valve timing. In fact I was taking cars with a buddy of mine (Subaru fan, and doesnt speak GM well) I told him that I had a 4.8 Vortech and after he went for a ride with me he said "You can really feel the cam phasing in the mid range on that in-line six."
Thinking that it was the 4.2 with the variable valve timing. The motor is stock other than,
Custom 4" intake the the bigest cone K&N I could find
Stock exhaust cut off before the muffler
HPP III
E-Fan
Vet servo
Aubern
Free Mods
My gearing doesnt help the lack of low end much either. Stock 3.42's and oversized tires, three inches taller then stock. It shifts out of first at 50mph, second at 85mph.
Wow its 2:30 in the morning I have to get up in five hours and I just type three pages on my power band. sorry but I do need to know if it is programing (lack of timing), the rediculous gearing, what?

VTEC = Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control My buds old Integra's VTEC would come on around 6000rpms and pull close to 8000rpms. Apparently there is an Economy version of VTEC and a Performance version too!
Subaru's is the AVCS = Active Valve Control System. Too bad my WRX didn't come with it, just the new STi's have it as well as most of the JDM Subaru's.
Don't forget about Toyota/Lexus VVT-i, BMW's Double VANOS, Nissan/Infinity has Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control, etc. Basically everyone runs one now as you get economy with the smaller cam(s) and more low end power and when the phasing switches, you get a huge top end rush!
ANYWAY...why your truck is slow. You basically made your 3.42:1 into ~3.12:1 with tires 3" taller. Each 1" takes about 0.1 off you gear ratio. A swap to 4.10:1 would get you running faster than stock and if you got a custom tune or went to a Predator programmer, you would gain more power too.

Re: V-tech Powerband
Honda has three typs of V-tech. The one to which I refer my powerband is like in you budies Integ. (B18 in Honda speak) I know the gearing SUCKS in my truck with the oversized tires, but the power comes on like V-tech. Like someone fliped a switch and changed cams on me at about 4000 rpm and it starts pulling hard. Gearing wouldnt necessarily explain the insta-power.
My truck is fast not quick.

Hmmm...maybe you need a tune up or something to give back some of the lost power you are missing. But that gearing isn't the best... it equates out to around 9.55:1 in 1st. Ah well it is still better than my F-150 w/ 3.55:1 gears and a 2.40:1 1st gear!
Ever try running a scan tool on the truck?

Re: V-tech Powerband
I would like to see the spark table that my truck has. I feel the spark is shy in the low range then comes up. ?I wonder if tow/haul will make a diff?
