I know, but if the gen 3 rods can carry me into the 600-700 horsepower range, then I'll go with that. I can get that 01 4.8L for 500.00. An 05 costs 900.00. I'm basing these prices off of car-part.com.

This one is local.

Autowrecking.com - B & R Auto - Late Model Car and Truck Parts : 2006 GMC GMC VAN Engine Assembly

I was thinking about offering them like 400.00 and see what they say.

What do you guys think about a cop car Tahoe? K9 unit. That engine probably has 1 million hours on it from idling. It has high compression though. LOL!

I think your over thinking this. Do what ever it is you want to do to your truck, see where it gets you. Tons and tons of people have pushed these far.

Well I found a 2004 4.8L on Craigslist. The want 650.00 for it and it's complete minus accessories. Wiring harness, intake, to oil pan. It has 66k on it. I think I can get it for 550.00 without the ECU. Would it be a good idea to get the ECU?

The guy said it was a government forest service vehicle that was wrecked in the fron control arm.

2004 is still a gen 3 so it would be a bolt in and retune correct?

If it is a 04 it is not guaranteed to have the ls2 rods and all in it. Find a 05-07 classic.

Yeah, but there's a chance that it might. LOL!

I mostly want a different engine to build up so I can swap my stocker back in incase I blow it up.

The 05-07 classic 4.8L cost around 800.00-1100.00 and have 150k on them.

Thanks for all the help! I'll keep searching.

Get a gen 3 and upgrade the rods if it makes you feel better...the engines themselves will be the same (pretty much) except for the reluctor ring. Everything else has to deal with the computer differences.

Any reason to avoid 4.8L out of vans? It looks like I could pick up an 06 for around 700.00.

It looks like most of your questions have been answered, I just wana say good job doing your research and educating yourself so you don't come in here and ask all the same questions that everyone else asks cause they don't know how to research! And good luck on your build!

Why are you set on the 4.8? Just boost your 5.3.
