If the manual says VI, why would you go with III? Save $30-$60? On a transmission that will cost $1,000-$2,500 to repair/replace? I believe GM recommends VI on all trucks 2006 and later, and says VI is a direct replacement for III in earlier models. And, it can be mixed with VI.

GM does not have an additive to convert III to VI.

You can always go up (III to VI), but you shouldn't go back (VI to III), if the manual says VI, go with VI

is there a reason that the 06 needs 6, but 05 uses 3. are the internals different?

The fluid came out to support a 6 speed tranny, I believe. However, the VI is better all around, and is recommended for all III applications. It is used as OEM fill on all GM autos.

When I change my '05 fluid, it will be with VI.

6 will help make your tranny outlast your motor

well, i went down and saw my trans guy. he assured me that the 3 and 6 are nearly the same but the six has a couple different additives in it. i wound up going with 3 and the additive he told me to put in. the gm tech also told me that there isnt much difference.

this is what i did last time as well and i havent had any problems yet....
