I was just wondering if the 8.1 was really that slow, b/c many people say the Dmax can outrun a 8.1 with both engines in stock form, so if the Dmax is doing a 17.9 with level 1 tune I guess the 8.1 would have to be showing a 18.5 1/4 mile time?
Stacey must not be able to drive very well.Stock Dmax's run from 15.60-16.00 depending on configuration.A 8.1 truck will be a consistent 3-6 tenths slower.A friend of mines bone stock 2002 crewcab 4x4 8.1 4.10 gear longbed went 16.40 at around 83 mph.

I tow my 1991 34' Airstream as well as a variety of other trailers from time to time. I've towed a small excavator, utility trailers, etc. My Airstream weighs 8,600 pounds loaded and the Vortec 6000 does a great job. It can tow the trailer with ease at 80 MPH up hill all day long I want. Click here to see a picture of the Yukon XL K2500 if you want https://ls1tech.com/forums//show...201&postcount=7

I have towed this trailer in the Rockies and it does just fine. Note, my son has a 2002 K2500HD with a Duramax and an Allison. We have towed the same trailer extensively with both vehicles. My Yukon XL is no match for the Duramax in the WOT acceleration department. But it isn't that shabby either. In normal moderate acceleration the 6.0 does just as well as the Duramax. Once I get up to crusing speed, the Yukon XL will maintain the same speeds with the Airstream in virtually any terrain.

Gas milage will depend on your habit even when towing. My 4.8 pulling my old 29' 6k travel trailer would get 10mpg in the hill country. Nineball's 5.3 got 12 pulling his old formula, and my friends 6.0 (2500hd 4x4) only got 9mpg towing a 24' boat. Those are some stats for you.

I appreciate the input from everyone. I've decided to stick with the 6.0, after doing some driving/towing. Still want to perk it up, though...

Yah I would not get caught up in WOT comparos, imagine what the trans will look like if you keep doing that.

Maybe a set of long tube headers and a 93 pump gas tune would give it that little perkup you want?

Definitely going to look into a Nelson or Wester's tune. I'd like to keep the stock exhaust (it kills me to cut off all that new stainless pipe), and replace the factory muffler with maybe a Spin Tech RV muffler. As we've got two little ones, I don't want a lot of volume, especially with a load. Anyone have any experience with the Spin tech RV muffler? Would long tubes increase the volume considerably?

I don't think longtubes would increase the sound too much but every header setup I've ever done on a car or truck before was accompanied with a loud muffler or glasspacks. I am going to go with dual Hooker aero-chamber mufflers with a balance or X-pipe a foot or so before the mufflers to smooth the tone a little. I now have a single dual in/out Flowmaster that has that notorious "drone" at certain rpms that I'm tired of. The Hookers should outflow the Flowmaster quite a bit as well.
